Simple Ceremonies Australia ("we", "us", "our") is a marriage celebrancy service operating in New South Wales, run by MACB Family Pty Ltd (ABN 24 137 901 574). This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how you can reach us about it.
We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. Marriage celebrants are also bound by the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) and the Marriage Regulations, which require us to collect and retain certain information whether or not we would otherwise choose to.
Your names, email addresses, phone numbers, the date and location of your ceremony, and anything you tell us about what you want on the day.
The Marriage Act 1961 requires a Notice of Intended Marriage before we can marry you. To complete it we collect, for each of you:
When you complete a Notice through our online form, you may photograph or upload documents so their details can be read into the form — a passport, driver licence, birth certificate, divorce order or death certificate.
We store these images. They are held encrypted and are visible only to Simple Ceremonies staff. We keep them because a celebrant must be able to show what documents were sighted.
Where you sign a Notice electronically, we keep the signed document, including your signature.
Some of what we collect is "sensitive information" under the Privacy Act — in particular details of a previous marriage ending, and identity documents that may disclose your country of origin.
We collect it only because the Marriage Act requires it, or because you have given it to us to complete your Notice. We do not use it for anything else, and we never use it for marketing.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not disclose it for anyone else's marketing.
When you photograph a document in our online form, the image is sent to Anthropic (the provider of the Claude AI service) to read the printed details from it, so you do not have to type them.
If you would rather not have a document read this way, type the details in yourself. Every field can be completed by hand.
Some of these providers store data outside Australia, including in the United States. By providing your information you consent to that disclosure. We take reasonable steps to use providers with appropriate security practices.
We will also disclose information where the law requires it.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.
When you ask us to delete a record we remove the stored documents with it.

We will respond within a reasonable time and will not charge you for asking. We may need to verify who you are first.
Some information we cannot delete. Once a Notice of Intended Marriage has been lodged, or a marriage solemnised, the Marriage Act requires us to keep those records. If we cannot act on your request we will tell you why.
